New Report: Bridging the Gender Gap in Climate-Resilient Agriculture

At NEDEA, we are committed to fostering sustainable partnerships between Africa and Germany. Our latest publication, “The Gender Lens in Climate-Resilient Agribusiness,” explores why gender-responsive policy is the key to a food-secure future.

Why Gender Matters

Did you know that in Sub-Saharan Africa, nearly 76% of working women are part of the agrifood system? Despite this, they are often the most vulnerable to climate change because they lack the same resources as men to adapt.

Our research highlights a critical reality check: In some regions, women make up the majority of the agricultural workforce but own as little as 2% of the land. This makes it incredibly difficult for them to invest in long-term tools like irrigation or sustainable farming techniques.

The Path Forward

The report identifies a US$96 billion financing gap for Africa’s small and medium agribusinesses—a gap that hits women-led businesses the hardest. To build true resilience, we advocate for:

Secure Land Rights: Empowering women to invest in their own farms.

Digital Inclusion: Closing the 30% gap in mobile internet use so women can access weather alerts and digital markets.

Targeted Finance: Creating credit lines specifically designed for women agripreneurs.

Building a Climate-Ready Africa

As Africa and Germany deepen their collaboration, moving toward gender-responsive climate resilience isn’t just about fairness–it’s a strategic investment in the continent’s stability and growth.
